Which arcade game fits your room

The word arcade covers two different kinds of machine. One is a cabinet narrower than most office doorways. The other stands nearly 9 ft tall with a 108 inch LED screen and needs a gym or a hall.

Most machines publish their size and outlet count on the product page, and those two figures tell you whether one fits your room.

The two numbers to check first

Before anything else, get these. Most units publish both, and they are the two things a room either has or does not.

• Ceiling height. Moving furniture will not fix a low ceiling. Measure it before you choose a machine.
• Outlet count. Not every machine runs on one plug. Our largest needs two.

The small end: a cabinet that goes almost anywhere

Our Multicade Console is from $350 and publishes an actual size of 25 in wide, 33 in deep, 67 in high. That is about 5 ft 7 in tall and narrower than most interior doorways, so it suits an office, a clubhouse, a rec room or a small hall.

That footprint holds 60 titles from the 1980s, including Pac-Man, Ms. Pac-Man, Galaga, Dig Dug, Donkey Kong, Centipede, Space Invaders and Frogger, among others. It lists one 110V outlet.

We rent three machines in this class, all from $350: the Multicade Console, the Galaga Multicade and the Pac-Man Multicade. If your room has an ordinary ceiling, start with this tier.

The big end: measure your ceiling first

Our World's Largest Pac-Man is from $995 and is a much bigger machine. It is described as standing nearly 9 ft tall with a 108 in LED screen, made by Bandai Namco, who designed the original Pac-Man arcade game in 1980. Two people play simultaneously on a pair of four-way joysticks, dodging Blinky, Pinky, Inky and Clyde, and the pedestal carries full-color LED lights that pulse in time with the game.

The published space requirement is 69 in deep, 120 in wide, 105 in high. Convert that and it is 5 ft 9 in deep, 10 ft wide, and 8 ft 9 in tall.

Check the height first. Many homes have 8 ft ceilings, and this machine needs 8 ft 9 in, so it is not a basement or living room rental. It belongs in a gym, a fellowship hall, a warehouse, a showroom or a large tent.

It also lists two 110V outlets. Tell whoever holds the keys, and check that the wall you plan to use is not already carrying a sound system or a concession machine.

We do not publish how the unit is transported or broken down, and the 120 in figure is the space it needs once placed, not a cabinet width. If it is going indoors, say so in your first message and include your door width and ceiling height.

The rest of the range

The VR Roller Coaster is a Rilix Coaster, a full virtual reality simulator with 10 visual scenarios plus vibration and wind systems, and it lists one 110V outlet. We do not publish a footprint for that unit, so ask for the space it needs and say whether it is going indoors or under a tent.

One big machine, or three small ones?

The prices are close enough to compare directly.

Three multicades at $350 each is $1,050. One World's Largest Pac-Man is $995, $55 less.

• Choose the big one for a centerpiece. It stands nearly 9 ft tall and plays two at a time, which suits a launch, an anniversary or an event you will promote again next year.
• Choose three small ones for a crowd. You get three lines instead of one, spread across the room, and 60 games on each cabinet.
• Three small ones also fit an 8 ft ceiling. The big one needs 8 ft 9 in.

Why arcades are the right call in November

Inflatables have firm weather limits: bouncers cannot be used in winds of 20 mph or more, and cannot be used in the rain.

An arcade machine sits indoors, so wind and rain do not stop it, and it works in December. For a company holiday party, a winter school event, a church youth night or a birthday in February, the arcade and virtual reality range works when an outdoor inflatable cannot.

A five minute check before you call

• Measure the ceiling and write the number down.
• Measure the doorway and note any steps, lifts or tight turns on the route in.
• Count working outlets in the wall you want to use, and check what is already on that circuit.
• Choose one centerpiece or several smaller machines, using the $1,050 against $995 comparison above.
